Before You Call

Before You Call

Find the policy number in your loved one’s documents, email, or safe. If you can’t find the policy, call with your loved one’s Social Security number — they can look it up.

Have ready:

  • Policy number

  • Date of death

  • Cause of death

  • Your contact information

  • Your relationship to the deceased

What to Know Before You Dial

What to Know Before You Dial

Life insurance payouts do not go through probate — they go directly to the named beneficiary. If you are the named beneficiary this money can arrive relatively quickly — sometimes within 2–4 weeks of filing the claim. You will need to request a claim form and submit it with a certified copy of the death certificate. Most companies accept this by mail, fax, or online portal. Can’t find the policy? Use the free NAIC Life Insurance Policy Locator at eapps.naic.org/life-policy-locator — insurance companies are required to search their records.

The Script

You don’t need to follow this word for word. It’s a guide — not a performance.

“Hi, I’m calling to file a death claim on a policy held by [full name]. They passed away on [date]. The policy number is [number]. I am the [beneficiary / executor / spouse].”

“Hi, I’m calling to file a death claim on a policy held by [full name]. They passed away on [date]. The policy number is [number]. I am the [beneficiary / executor / spouse].”

Before hanging up always ask: “Can you walk me through the claims process and what documents you need?” “How many certified death certificates do you require?” “Can I file the claim online or does it need to be mailed?” “What is the typical processing time once you receive everything?” “Is there anything that could delay or complicate the claim I should know about?”

Ask for the claims department’s direct mailing address and email before you hang up.
